If You Have Back Pain, What’s
Causing It?

How can you tell if your back pain is muscle, disc, or bone related?

Since there are several common causes of back pain, and the first step in fixing a problem is identifying the exact type of back issue you’re dealing with.

From there the right plan of care can be implemented.

This starts with a thorough history and physical examination which allows us to pinpoint the root cause, and from there, create a complete plan of action to get you feeling better as fast as possible and as cost effectively as possible.

Muscle Strain

Muscle strains usually happen over time due to a repetitive stress or overuse injury.

Strains happen most commonly in your lower back, neck, shoulder, and hamstrings.

They are painful while limiting that muscles ability to move properly and can be associated with  bruising/discoloration, swelling, and possible muscle spasms.

Herniated Discs

Between the bone of your spine, your discs act as a shock absorber, a ligament, and a joint.

When it herniates, the inside (the nucleus) of the disc pushes through the outside (the annulus fibrosus) of your disc wall.

The results in the disc irritating or compressing the spinal nerves and are can be extremely painful.

That pain will radiate from your spine and you’ll usually feel it more on one side. It can also travel into your extremity, like in the case of sciatica.

Spinal Stenosis

The bone grows over itself, and that is what puts pressure on the spinal cord and nerves.

This can cause not only pain, but numbness with walking and over time can lead to leg weakness as well as sensory loss.

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal column.
