The Link Between Stress & Headaches
Do you feel that you are always rushing around?
Do you dread that “Big Meeting at Work”? The stress of day to day life can all add up… and your headache is off to the races.
And, it's not the even the stimulus that’s doing it, it’s your body's reaction to stress.
Anxiety increasing your blood pressure while you clench your jaw or tense your muscles only increase your chances of experiencing a headache.
Does that make sense?
Episodic (sporadic) headaches, are often triggered by isolated, stressful incidents.
Chronic headaches typically happen because of daily, constant stress.
A few of the most common everyday stress triggers include:
- relationship troubles
- poor lifestyle habits
- poor sleep habits
- significant life changes.

Quick question - for anyone who has ever been a parent to a young child. Is feeding your child nutritious food important? Do young children seem to need to get their energy out? How important are children’s sleep patterns?
Why is it that when we grow up and are able to make our own decisions we sometimes forget that we are the same species, with the same base requirements needed to express health as when we were children?
Question period is over. On to solutions.
First, Exercise More.
Regular exercise boosts endorphins, which help put you in a better mood. It also increases energy and helps take the focus off the events that are stressing you out.
Second, Get Some Sleep.
Aim to get at least 8 hours of sleep each night. Falling asleep at the same time every night and getting up at the same time each morning will help you fall into a healthy sleep pattern.
Are we seeing a pattern? You have my permission to take care of yourself. If you come into the office, I’ll even write you a note.
As we discussed yesterday, it can be hard in today’s world to slow down and take care of ourselves.

Third, Relax:Make time for relaxation techniques that help you feel calm during periods of high stress. Meditation and yoga are just two techniques that can help you feel relaxed and collected under pressure and help mitigate the onset of stress.
Fourth, shameless plug. See a Chiropractor: Keeping your spinal joints moving correctly can reduce the strain on your spine and it's supporting muscles. Chiropractic care can help you relieve pent up stress in your body and get you feeling better quickly.
So, can stress cause headaches?

When you feel the stressors of your daily life start to add up, take a moment to practice some relaxation techniques and make sure you get in some exercise. Use preventive measures like eating well and getting better sleep. And be sure to make time to see your Chiropractor to keep your body relaxed and stress-free.
