If you are reading these words, there’s a good chance you or someone you care about has at some point experienced back pain.
And, you’re not alone.
Did you know, after the common cold, it is the number two reason for going to the Doctor?
31 million Americans report having back pain on any given day, and a lot of time it’s because of spinal disc issues.
So, another deep dive this week. What is a disc? How does it go bad?
And What You Can Do About It.
First, they act as a shock absorber between the bones of your spine.
Second, they act as ligaments to hold those bones together.
Third, they act as a joint, because your spine needs to move.
It does these jobs by being a jelly donut with a tough outer portion (the annulus fibrosus) encases the gel-like “jelly” (the nucleus pulposus”
Back pain or sciatic pain in your leg happens when your disc is damaged and presses on your spinal nerves.
The first type of disc damage is called a Herniated Disc (which is often called a slipped disc, or a ruptured disc).
Since a disc will usually only herniate to one side or the other, the symptoms will usually show up on one side of your spine, or in one leg or one arm at a time.
The types of symptoms that can occur are burning, sharp, stabbing, or shooting pain into your back, hips, and legs in the case of a lumbar (low back) disc herniation.
Or, in the case of a cervical (neck) disc will have these same symptoms into your shoulders, arms, hands, and fingers.
In worse cases this can be accompanied with numbness, tingling, or weakness (if there's spinal nerve compression).
The second type of disc damage is called Degenerative Disc Disease.
This occurs when one or more of your spine’s discs break down due to age and injury.
The unfortunate result, of course is pain.
The problem is, over time, your discs can become worn and lose their rubbery texture, losing its shock absorber qualities, and flexibility.
Does Your Back or neck hurt?
Do the symptoms run into your extremity?
That’s bad news.
The good news is, I would like to tell you with complete candor and sincerity…
If God put me on this planet for any purpose other than loving and serving my family, it would be helping people with Disc Pain issues.

Human beings are some of the only mammals who walk on 2 feet . So, instead of being on all fours and our spine being a suspension bridge…
We are upright so our spine is a hat rack.
It’s no wonder that over 80% of us will deal with low back pain at some point in our life. Being upright, our movement patterns, our injury history, and even how much time you spend sitting each day can play a huge role on your chances of joining that 80%
When your spine become overloaded beyond their normal limits you get Low Back Pain.
So what that means is the joints of your spine, the discs, the muscles, tendons, and ligaments , first, support your body’s weight against gravity.
And second they perform and amazingly intricate series of movements at the correct time and in the correct manner in order for you to bend move and stretch.
It’s traumas and microtraumas that cause injury to your spine either all at once (traumas), or gradually over time (microtraumas).
As weird as it may sound, sitting may be as harmful as smoking.
Researchers have said that sitting for 4 hours per day is the equivilant, health-wise as smoking a pack of cigarettes per day, increasing blood pressure, and raising cholesterol levels.
It also seriously increases your risk of developing back pain because if you don’t use it, you can lose it.
Increasing your mobility decreases your chances of suffering with back pain issues.
So, be proactive.
A daily exercise routine and stretching at home and especially at work can help you reduce incidence of back pain.
For office workers having access to a sit to standing work area helps, if not, try to remember to stand up every 30 minutes and move for 30 seconds.
Try walking for 10 minutes during your lunch break and keep yourself moving.
Also, a 5 minute stretching routine can be a great way to wake up in the morning to keep your body and spine healthy.
A little walking, a little stretching, and a little attention to getting up if sitting for hours on end are all great tools to keep your body healthy and pain-free.
And if you do need help, the good news is that Chiropractic care is a safe and effective way to get rid of back pain..
After 22 years as a Chiropractor, we’ve helped a lot of different people with a lot of different problems.
What they all have in common is, like you, we all want to be happy, healthy, and pain-free so we can all do the things we love, with the people we love.
See you next week, thanks guys!
